How to Boost Air Conditioner Efficiency

If you’ve invested in high-efficiency air conditioning for your home, you already know how effective and economical these systems can be. Over time, however, their efficiency can decrease, reducing performance and increasing cooling costs. Here are a few ways you can boost air conditioner efficiency to ensure you continue to get the most benefit out of your cooling equipment.

  • Change the filters. Simple and easy to do, a filter change is probably the most basic way to increase air conditioner efficiency. Dirty filters reduce the amount of air flowing through the system, which cuts into the system’s efficiency. Put in fresh, clean filters and you should see the system’s efficiency and performance increase almost immediately.
  • Seal the ductwork. If the ductwork of your HVAC system develops leaks, large amounts of cooled air can escape between the air conditioner and the interior of your home. This wastes large amounts of energy and money and substantially reduces system efficiency. Make sure all ductwork sections are fitted together tightly and have been sealed at each connection with mastic or metal tape.
  • Install a programmable thermostat. Modern programmable thermostats are designed to take full advantage of the efficiency of your cooling system. They can automatically adjust the amount of cooling reaching the inside of your home based on settings that you choose. Set points, for example, are temperature settings that decrease cooling when you’re out of the house for the day and then increase cooling in time to make the inside of your home comfortable when you return.
  • Have maintenance performed. Regular preventive maintenance by an HVAC professional will ensure your air conditioner’s efficiency while also increasing its expected service life. Call your HVAC pro in the spring to have these tune-ups and adjustments performed.
